The "Algarve Coastline Bike Tour" is part of the Eurovelo 1-Atlantic Coast Route, which crosses many european countries, from Norwegian to Portugal, passing through the Algarve and connecting Vila Real de Santo António in the east, to Cape Saint Vincent in the west, over a distance of around 250 km/155,34 mi. On this adventure, you will have the opportunity to discover amazing coastal scenery, passing through beaches, cities, villages and natural areas, such as the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the Castro Marim Marshland Natural Reserve.
The Algarve is awarded every year for having some of the best beaches in the world and this tour takes you to pass right by some of them. However, you will also visit historical cities with its castles, churches and other remainings of ancient civilizations.

Day 1 – Arrival in the Algarve

When arriving Faro, a Bikesul staff member will welcome you, providing you with details about the region and the tour. After that, transfer will get you to the hotel in Tavira. After the check-in, take the opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful and historic city from Portugal.
If you have time visit the beach located in the other bank, Ria Formosa,  this will be an excellent opportunity to relax in one of the most beautiful beaches of eastern Algarve.

Day 2 - Tavira - Vila Real de Santo António Loop (66/ 41mi - 450m of climbing)

The first day of cycling will be a circular loop, the perfect way to get used to your bicycle and to the Algarve weather, way of life and rhythm. 
Leaving the Hotel you will cycle along the promenade by the Ria Formosa. Then following the route will be really easy as this is the best signed part of the Eurovelo 1 route in Portugal. 
A few kilometers further, there is Cacela Velha, located on a hill right next to the Ria Formosa, where the view from the church and the fort over the sea is very special. After passing through the towns of Manta Rota, Altura and Monte Gordo, popular summer destinations due to its paradisiac coastline you will get to Vila Real de Santo António,. Half-away on your first riding day. 
Vila Real de Santo António is the western village of the Algarve located on the banks of the Guadiana River, a natural border between Portugal and Spain. After riding the city streets, you will continue inland through the lands of Castro Marim, where you can see the marshland and the military fort. Riding west you will face the only climb of the day that will take you to the famous Monte Rei golf course. 
Enjoy the view over the eastern Algarve from this point. Then you will pass through the small typical village of Santa Rita before you return to your hotel.

Day 3 - Tavira - Faro (31mi / 200m of climbing)

On your second riding day you will have the Ria Formosa as a travel companion. Leaving Tavira, you will pass some saltpans before reaching the piscatory village of Santa Luzia, known as the octopus capital.
Moving forward, the route is flat and pleasant with the path very well signposted. Riding toward Olhão you will pass by small fishing villages such as Fuzeta, famous for its salt exploration and also its fresh fish. 
Continuing along the Ria Formosa bank you will get to Olhão, a very characteristic Algarve town and closely linked to the sea and fishermen. For this reason, the municipal market is undoubtedly a place to visit. 
Today’s destination is the capital of the Algarve, the city of Faro, located just 8 km away from Olhão. 
In Faro, take the opportunity to visit the downtown and the old town, inside the walls.

Day 4 – Faro - Armação de Pêra (41mi / 480m of climbing)

In this stage you will cycle along the central area of the Algarve and notice a sudden change of landscape in which the long sandy beaches give way to cliffs. 
Leaving Faro you will have the opportunity to bypass Faro Airport and see the planes and the runway up close. Then ride the last moments in the Ria Formosa and pass through the luxurious area of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. Then you will get to Quarteira, another popular summer destination for the Portuguese. At the end of the promenade you have the fish and fruit local market. Then right beside Quarteira you have Vilamoura, famous for its fancy marina and known for being a very busy area at night, due to the bars and restaurants located in the area, 5 star hotels and golf courses. 
Leaving Vilamoura you will ride through the Falesia cliffs. The area is a bit sandy but the stunning views over the coast definitely worth the effort.
From Olhos de Água place to Albufeira city the way is a bit urban as Albufeira is the most touristic city of the Algarve.
For sure the downtown of Albufeira and the Praia dos Pescadores area is the most interesting to visit. The area is a bit hilly here with short but steep hills to overpass.
Riding through the marina of Albufeira you will then pass by the beaches of Arrifes, Galé and Salgados. In Salgados the natural park with its salty lake offers a great opportunity for the birdwatchers. 
A long woodpath along the dune and the coast takes you to your destination of the day, the town of Armação de Pêra.

Day 5 – Armação de Pêra - Lagos (37mi / 500m of climbing)

This day starts with a visit to another of the most famous places in the region, the chapel of Senhora da Rocha, located on a cliff into the sea. Perfect place for a trip photo! 
Riding inland you will pass by the city of Lagoa, a land of wine. Then a fast section takes you to Ferragudo, a beautiful fishing village on a small hill located on the bank of Rio Arade with Portimão just on the other side. The central square (praça central) is perfect to have a drink or a meal, and just a 5 min walk up through the narrow streets of the village takes you to the church on the top of the hill. The views over the river and Portimão city are superb. 
Continuing your journey you will pass the old bridge that takes you to Portimão. Following the cycling lane along the Arade river you will get to Praia da Rocha, a very famous summer destination. 
Riding along the coast you will get to the Alvor Bay. Here you can opt to cycle around the Bay to Meia Praia or take a boat to Lagos.

Day 6 - Lagos - Sagres (37mi/ 820m of climbing)

This last day will be special, for its beauty. Leaving Lagos you will start to visit one of the most famous spots of the Algarve, often seen in Algarve postcard covers, the Ponta da Piedade. 
Proceeding on the route, you will then pass by villages of Aldeia da Luz and then Burgau, small villages highly sought after for their paradisiacal beaches.
After, you will visit Vila do Bispo, a place where the wild nature, combined with a rich cultural heritage, remains intact. The landscape here changes dramatically with the Atlantic Ocean weather having a lot of influence. The way to the famous Cape Saint Vincent located on the western point of Europe is mostly on gravel roads and you will notice the quietness of the place. 
Once in Cape Saint Vincent take some time to explore the ancient building and the lighthouse before you ride east to Sagres.
Sagres is a village located in the southwestern edge of the Algarve coast. If you have time, take the opportunity to visit the village, the fortress and the fishing harbor.

Day 7 – Departure
We have reached the end of the trip.
Transfers to the airport will be arranged but if you’re planning on staying a few extra days, let us know if we can help with a few recommendations.
