Bikesul GPS Race Results

Last weekend, on January 6th and 7th, the 1st edition of the Bikesul Gps Race event took place in the Algarve/Alentejo/Algarve regions. The event saw the participation of 70 athletes. On the morning of January 6th, 64 participants took part in the stage that connected São Brás de Alportel and Almodôvar, covering a distance of 76.8km. The initial part of the stage featured constant singletracks and winding trails typical of the Algarve's landscape. Navigation played a crucial role in this GPS-guided race, and the cold and wind added to the challenge.

The essence of the event lies in camaraderie and a positive atmosphere, which prevailed throughout. The challenging ascent to Malhão and the climb to the peak of Mú at almost 600 meters defined the race, with two athletes from Casa do Benfica de Almodôvar, Luís Jorge and Ricardo Pires, leading the way. The finish line was set at the Medieval Bridge of Almodôvar, a historic and uniquely beautiful location.

In the women's category, Celina Carpinteiro from Cycling Team Albufeira/CDASJ led the entire stage ahead of Marlene Costa, with Marisa Raimundo of CBTTA finishing in 3rd place. Sixty athletes completed this stage.

The participants were treated to a magnificent dinner at Solar da Portela, where they could socialize and share their experiences in a fantastic setting. The awards ceremony for the stage took place after dinner.

On Sunday, January 7th, the 2nd stage covered a different route from Almodôvar to Fonte Férrea (São Brás de Alportel) over a distance of 64.8km. Despite lower temperatures at the start, the almost negligible wind made the stage even more enjoyable. The stage began with a fast pace, showcasing the magnificent plains of Alentejo, adorned by some gently rolling hills, a beautiful scenery dominated by the greenery of this time of year.

After crossing the Vascão stream, the athletes entered the Serra do Caldeirão itself, although the climbs on this day were not as demanding. Passing through Ameixial in the Loulé municipality, a still numerous group led the race, gradually breaking up later on.

In Montes Novos, the stage passed through the center of the village, delighting the many visitors who usually come here for lunch.

The last 5km of the stage, connecting Menta to Fonte Férrea, were a pure descent. Three athletes from Casa do Benfica de Almodôvar stood out in the lead, crossing the finish line individually, with Nuno Mendes as the winner. In second place was Luís Jorge, and in third, Ricardo Pires. Thus, in the overall classification, Luis Jorge emerged as the overall winner of this 1st edition.

In the women's category, Celina Carpinteiro once again stood out, winning the stage and, consequently, the overall classification. Marlene Costa from Gyrad secured the 2nd position, and Susana Fialho from Vertentability finished in 3rd place.

Overall, participants provided highly positive feedback, praising the organization, the routes, and the spirit of the event, indicating that this event format has significant potential. Bikesul expresses gratitude for the support of KTM Bike Industries and Enervit, and acknowledges the collaboration of the municipalities of São Brás de Alportel and Almodôvar, as well as the support from Line Star Life for medical assistance and the National Republican Guard.
