Sam Bennett won the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve

Sam Bennett, from Deceuninck – Quick-Step, was the winner of the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve, with 189.5 kilometers connecting Lagos to Portimão. The Irishman triumphed in the sprint, winning  over Danny van Poppel (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), who was second, ahead of Jon Aberasturi Izaga of Caja Rural – Seguros.
Iúri Leitão was the best Portuguese, in fifth place.
