Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) emerged victorious in the 48th edition of the Volta ao Algarve.
The fifth and final stage was last Sunday, between Lagoa and the top of Malhão (173 km) and was won by Colombian Sergio Higuita (BORA-hansgrohe). Higuita made the same time as Daniel Martinez (INEOS) and one second less than the American Brandon McNulty (UAE Emirates).
Evenepoel won 1.17 minutes ahead of McNulty and 1.21 minutes ahead of Martinez. The Belgian athlete came in fifth place, but it was enough to secure his second final victory in the Volta ao Algarve, thus repeating the victory of 2020.
