Richard Carapaz isolated himself and reached the goal alone, thus achieving the gold medal in cycling at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

Carapaz was third in the Tour de France and winner of the Tour de Italia in 2019.

The best Portuguese cyclist in the race was João Almeida, who finished the race in 13th.
