João Almeida (UAE Emirates Team) rose to vice-leader of the Tour of Italy, surpassing Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos) in the general classification, who lost time in the third stage.
The Portuguese cyclist rose to second place, but was a little further away from the pink jersey Remco Evenepoel (Soudal). The Belgian cyclist now has a lead of 32 seconds.
The third stage of the Giro, between Vasto and Melfi, was won in a sprint by Australian Michael Matthews (Jayco), who completed the 213 kilometers in 5h01m41s. Almeida finished 41st with the same time as the winner.
