The Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep-Alpha Vinyl) won yesterday, in the 'sprint', the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve on bicycle, on arrival in Lagos, thus taking the lead in the general.
Between Portimão and Lagos, with 1991, 1 km in 4:56:29 hours, Jakobsen was ahead of the Belgian Jordi Meeus (BORA-hansgrohe) who finished in second place, and the French Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) who was third in the podium.
The best portuguese cyclist was Rui Oliveira (UAE Emirates), who finished the first stage in sixth place, with two falls within the last 40 kilometers.
Today, Thursday, the second stage connects Albufeira to the top of Fóia, in Monchique.
